One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear Brother,

As-salam-alaikum,

I was asked by one of my brothers as to why do we say ameen during our prayers? Becos in Quran ameen is not mentioned and during our Qiyam(Standing for prayers) we should recite only quran.

Pls help me to answer the above question with some authentic proof so I can understand myself and explain him. May allah bless you for your help.

Answer:

Ameen in prayer

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Although it is not considered obligatory, there is compelling evidence and a preferred Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) to say ‘ameen’ aloud with the imam at the end of the recitation of Surah al-Fateha when praying in congregation, and silently when one is praying alone.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 1.136

Sunnah acts of prayer, Saying 'Ameen

It is Sunnah for everyone to say 'ameen’ after reciting al-Fatihah.  The word ‘ameen’ is not part of Surah al-Fatihah, but rather a supplication meaning, "O Allah, respond (to, or answer what we have said).  It should be said aloud in the prayers where the recital is aloud, and quietly in the prayers where the recital is silent.

Said Na'eem al-Mujamir, "I prayed behind Abu Hurairah and he said, 'In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful,' then recited Surah al-Fatihah, and closed it with 'ameen’.  The people also said 'ameen’.  After the prayer, Abu Hurairah said, 'By the One in whose Hand is my soul, I have followed the prayer of the Prophet (saws)."

Related by Al-Bukhari, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Khuzaimah, Ibn Hibban and Ibn as-Siraj.

Ibn Shihab (az-Zuhri) said, "The Messenger of Allah (saws)would say 'ameen’ (after recitation of Surah al-Fateha in prayers)."

Related by Bukhari.

Abu Hurairah said, "When the Messenger of Allah (saws) would recite, '...Not with those with whom You are displeased, and not of those who have gone astray (end of Surah al-Fateha),' he (saws) would say 'ameen’, such that those close to him could hear him." (Related by Abu Dawud.) Ibn Majah's version is, "Until the people in the first row would hear him, and the mosque would ring with the sound."  Al-Hakim also relates this hadith.

Wa'il ibn Jubair says, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) recite, '...and not of those who have gone astray (end of Surah al-Fateha),' and then say 'ameen’, and make it long with his voice." (Related by Ahmad.)

Reported 'Ata, "I have found two hundred companions of the Prophet (saws) in this mosque and when the imam recited,'...and not of those who have gone astray (end of Surah al-Fateha),' I heard them say 'ameen.’

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (saws) said, When the imam recites, '... not of those with whom You are angered nor of those who have gone astray (end of Surah al-Fateha),' you should say 'ameen’.  If this corresponds to when the Angels say it, he will have all of his previous sins forgiven." (Related by al-Bukhari.)

Your Question: I was asked by one of my brothers as to why do we say ameen during our prayers?

Dear and beloved brother in Islam, if one reads Surah Al-Fatihah with understanding, one will realize that this Surah is a beautiful dua and supplication taught to the believers by their Lord Most Merciful, beseeching their Lord to guide them to the Straight Path.

After making any supplication to the Lord Most Gracious, it is only proper etiquette and protocol that one who sincerely fears their Lord and hopes for His Mercy and His Grace, just not ask something from His Lord as if he is demanding it as a right, but in total and absolute humility, awe, fear, and hope begs and implores the Lord Most Majestic to favorably respond to His believing and repentant slaves’ supplications.

Thus brother, the wisdom behind the saying of the term ‘Ameen’ after making a supplication or after the recitation of the Surah Al-Fatihah as practiced and taught by the Messenger of Allah (saws), is no more than a manifestation of the state of the utter humility, sincerity, helplessness, awe, fear and hope with which a slave addresses his Lord Most High, Most Majestic.

MEANING OF AAMEEN, & MORE DETAILS ABOUT AAMEEN.

The word Amen (آمين) is said to have originated from Hebrew since it has been found in old Hebrew Scriptures, coming before the Quran. The word (אמן) in Hebrew means: Amen, so be it, surely, truth, faith. The Arabic word (آمين‎) also shares the same root word as (آمن) - Aamana (He Believed), (مؤمن) Moumin - Believer. Arabic, Hebrew, and Aramaic are all Semitic languages that share very simmilar grammar structure and vocabulary. It's hard to exactly pinpoint where the word originated from, as for now, we know it has originated from Hebrew, as did the name Maryam, Yahya, and Moses, which are used in the Quran as well

Amen is an innovation,we should not say that ,,it is not part of Glorious Quran Inspired to Prophet MuhammedAmen: Saying "Amen" after the opening Sura is reported in a Hadith. It was said that a companion of the prophet said "Amen" after Muhammad had recited the Penning Sura in the Salat. After finishing Salat, Muhammad, allegedly said that he saw angels blessing the one who said "Amen" and were hurrying up to take it to GOD.

The Angels say, 'Ameen' to the Dua of those, who pray for their absent fellow Muslim

The Angels say, 'Ameen' to the Dua of those, who pray for their absent fellow MuslimIn Saheeh Muslim and Sunan Ibn Majah, it is narrated from Abu Darda that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said, 'The Dua of a person for his Muslim brother in his absence will be answered. At his head there is an angel, and every time he prays for him for something good, the angel who has been appointed to be with him, says, 'Ameen, may you have likewise.' (*62)

In light of this Hadeeth, two kinds of people achieve the merit of the Angel's saying, 'Ameen' First are those absent Muslims for whom the supplication is performed because the Angel says, 'Ameen' for such a supplication, which means, 'O Allah, accept this Dua for the absent Muslim.' The second category of people contains those people who supplicate for the absent Muslims because the Angel says, 'and for you too' after, 'Ameen,' meaning may Allah grant you the same.   https://www.facebook.com/notes/842122919862394/
